CarMax Volunteers Will Build 30 Playgrounds for 100,000 Children Across the United States

RICHMOND, Va. (June 26, 2013) – CarMax, Inc. (NYSE: KMX), the nation’s largest retailer of used cars, officially opened its first store in Katy, Texas, located at 21636 Katy Freeway. The store is more than 21,000-square-feet, occupies more than eight acres, employs more than 40 associates and stocks approximately 275 used vehicles of nearly every make and model.

In celebration of CarMax’s fifth Houston-area store, the company is hosting an online “Road Rally for Charity” contest, which launches today on the CarMax Facebook page. CarMax is donating a total of $5,000 to three local nonprofits who are competing for votes. The organizations, selected for their impact on the community, are the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Houston, Habitat for Humanity of Northwest Harris County and Star of Hope, focused on meeting the needs of Houston’s homeless.

“CarMax is honored to support these organizations making a difference in the area of our new store,” said Billy Thomas, Location general manager of the Katy CarMax. “We take pride in being a positive part of our community, while providing a unique car buying experience.”

Until July 10, individuals can visit the CarMax Facebook page to cast their vote for one of the charities. Each charity will receive a donation of $1,000 for participating. The charity that receives the most votes will receive an additional $2,000 donation and be announced on the CarMax Facebook page.

CarMax opened its first store in Richmond, Va. nearly 20 years ago after the company
surveyed thousands of consumers to find out what they liked and disliked about car shopping. CarMax was designed according to the survey responses, giving consumers what they asked for:
