RICHMOND, Va. (April 18, 2013) – CarMax Inc., (NYSE: KMX), the nation’s largest retailer of used cars, officially opened its first store in Columbus, Ga., today, located at 6463 Veterans Parkway. The store is more than 13,000-square-feet, employs about 45 associates and stocks more than 250 used vehicles of nearly every make and model.
“We continue to look for ways to engage our customers and create a unique buying experience,” said Tom Folliard, president and CEO of CarMax. “Our Columbus store will feature interactive digital displays, videos, tablets, and wireless technology.”
More than 200 local dignitaries and CarMax associates attended a grand opening event at the Columbus location today. The event included a "Road Rally" for charity featuring local television personalities competing in contests, which included parallel-parking and pack-the-trunk events. CarMax donated $1,000 to each participant’s charity, and the winner’s charity received an additional $1,000.
The CarMax Road Rally participants included WLTZ (CW) ‘Starting Today’ Producer and Co-anchor Kirstin Delgado and WLTZ (NBC) ‘Starting Today’ Weatherman and Co-anchor Miller Robson both supporting Russell County Child Advocacy. They were joined by WTVM (ABC) / WXTV (FOX) Weekend Sports Anchor Alexandra Vitale sponsoring Make-A-Wish® Georgia and WRBL (CBS) Reporter Carlos Williams sponsoring West Central Georgia Cancer Coalition.
CarMax opened its first store in Richmond, Va., nearly 20 years ago after the company surveyed thousands of consumers to find out what they liked and disliked about car shopping. CarMax was designed according to the survey responses, giving consumers what they asked for:
