Company Managers Participate in Training While Volunteering

RICHMOND, Va. (July 24, 2012)-CarMax, Inc. (NYSE: KMX), the nation’s largest retailer of used cars, is kicking off a creative leadership initiative called The Summit Program that will incorporate training focused on developing successful leaders, as well as valuable partnerships with Richmond area nonprofit organizations. New managers at all CarMax locations will participate in the program.

The twelve-week training includes lessons focused on developing the qualities of successful leaders. The final week of the program, known as The Summit Experience, will be hosted at the Goochland-based CarMax Home Office and at Richmond area nonprofit organizations, allowing associates to demonstrate their leadership skills in several activities.

Managers will build bikes through Richmond Cycling Corps, a nonprofit that is committed to changing the lives of children in public housing projects through cycling. This partnership reflects the importance of wellness and accountability, which are both important in the CarMax culture. The CarMax Foundation granted $25,000 to Richmond Cycling Corps in support of its program.

“Weaving the values of The CarMax Foundation into a new leadership development program is such an extraordinary opportunity,” said Lynn Mussatt, president of The CarMax Foundation and vice president of business operations. “Those participating in The Summit Program will impact and inspire the lives of local children while developing the qualities to successfully lead their CarMax teams.”

CarMax managers involved in The Summit Experience will also volunteer in team-building activities with local children through the YMCA of Greater Richmond and Communities in Schools of Richmond. Each of the volunteer activities will reinforce concepts like respect, communication and teamwork, which are emphasized during The Summit Program training.
