RICHMOND, Va.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 22, 2009--CarMax, Inc. (NYSE:KMX), the nation's largest retailer of used cars, has been named by FORTUNE magazine as one of its 2009 "100 Best Companies to Work For." This is the fifth consecutive year CarMax has been named to the list. CarMax ranks No. 31 on the list for 2009.

"Our associates' dedication and innovation continues to move our company forward through this challenging economy and difficult retail environment, and they are the reason CarMax continues to be on the '100 Best Companies to Work For' list," said Tom Folliard , president and chief executive officer of CarMax.

The company's commitment to the community is visible through its Volunteer Team-Builder Program, which is run by The CarMax Foundation. "Participation has increased significantly this past year," Folliard said. "Our associates recognize needs in their communities and donate their time and talents. This has been especially valuable during a year that has hit nonprofit organizations so hard." Projects have included working with underserved children and homeless shelters, participating in walks that support non-profits, and helping to build homes for deserving families. CarMax locations have also hosted blood, food and toy drives throughout the year. The CarMax Foundation has given more than $6.5 million dollars to nonprofit organizations since it was established in 2003.

CarMax offers consumers a no-hassle, no-haggle car-buying experience and a broad selection of high-quality used vehicles. CarMax guarantees the quality of the cars sold, does not sell flood- or frame-damaged vehicles, and guarantees a clean title and accurate odometer readings on its cars. All vehicles are thoroughly inspected and reconditioned with a five-day, money-back guarantee and a limited 30-day warranty (60-day in Conn.).

FORTUNE's annual ranking of companies is based primarily upon a confidential, random survey of associates, as well as an evaluation of a company's culture, compensation, training, and turnover.
