Shamim Mohammad

Shamim Mohammad, EVP, Chief Information and Technology Officer

Shamim Mohammad is the executive vice president and chief information and technology officer at CarMax. He oversees the strategic use of technology across the company, including digital innovations and product engineering, to deliver revenue-generating products and solutions that drive competitive advantages. He leads a high-performing entrepreneurial technology team and is known for growing and cultivating digital talent by fostering a culture of learning and innovation. Shamim is passionate about building organizational agility through the innovative use of technology. 

In close partnership with other senior leaders, Shamim led CarMax through a massive digital transformation in all areas of the business, including re-platforming all major technologies to create a digital backbone, developing world-class supply chain capabilities, and leveraging machine learning and artificial intelligence to power the business. This transformation has positioned CarMax to innovate at scale.

Shamim began his career at a technology startup focusing on automating all aspects of small to mid-size retail businesses. Since then, he has served in various diverse strategic leadership roles in startup organizations and Fortune 500 companies across the retail, travel, hospitality, finance, and technology industries. Prior to joining CarMax in 2012, Shamim served as vice president of information and technology for BJ’s Wholesale, where he developed the company’s e-commerce platform, transformed supply chain and distribution capabilities, and advanced data science practices. He was the fifth employee and senior technology leader for a marketing technology and data analytical startup TravelCLICK, where he created business intelligence and interactive digital media products and technologies from the ground up, serving thousands of hotels around the world. TravelCLICK was ultimately sold in 2018 for $1.5 billion. 

In 2020, MIT Sloan selected Shamim as the recipient of the CIO Leadership Award, which recognizes CIOs who lead their organizations to deliver exemplary levels of business value through the innovative use of technology.

Shamim has been quoted in national outlets such as Harvard Business Review, MIT Sloan Review, Forbes and The Wall Street Journal. In 2021 Shamim was featured by Forbes Magazine as one of the top 50 CIOs in the nation who are redefining the CIO role and driving game-changing innovation. In 2024 Shamim was inducted into the CIO Hall of Fame.  

Shamim received his MBA from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University and Bachelor of Science in computer science from Angelo State University.  He is a registered CPA in the state of Illinois. 

He currently serves on the Board of Directors for United Natural Foods, Inc. (UNFI). UNFI is a Fortune 150 company and the largest wholesaler of organic and natural foods in the US and Canada. He also serves on several nonprofit boards and is passionate about improving health and education access in the U.S. and around the world.
